A PARADISE OF NATURE, CULTURE AND GASTRONOMY

Beautiful city dating from the 1st century BC totally surrounded by a majestic wall 2.5 km long built in stone with 87 circular towers and ten formidable gates that protected it during the Middle Ages. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985 and its construction began in the eleventh century by order of King Alfonso VI of León taking 9 years to complete.

Known as the city of saints and knights, within its walls there are endless monuments, churches, monasteries, among other places to visit. Among them are the Cathedral of El Salvador (you have to climb the great bell tower), the Basilica of San Vicente, Convent of Santa Ana, Convent of Santo Tomás and the Convent of Santa Teresa.

The future Queen Isabella the Catholic spent several years of her youth in the Santa Ana Convent, it was also there that the Catholic Monarchs moved after the death of their only son, Prince Juan. The prince was buried in the Convent of Santo Tomás, where for a few years the Holy Inquisition was based, with the general inquisitor Fray Tomás Torquemada as its Head Inquisitor, in addition to being a royal site and summer home of the Catholic Monarchs.

It is worth mentioning in its cuisine trout,  roasted sucking pig, the famous veal of Ávila and for dessert the yolks of Santa Teresa and the nun’s tits.

When departing Avila a mandatory stop is at the monument of the Four Posts, which provides a panoramic view of Avila that leaves the traveler breathless.
