THE FINAL 20 KM
It is the final 20 km stretch to the Portal de la Catedral de Santiago and the Plaza del Obradoiro. You pass through the village of Lavacolla where tradition says that pilgrims stood to groom before arriving in Santiago. From Monte do Gozo you have the first view of the Romanesque-style cathedral that was consecrated in 1128.
Tradition also says that pilgrims must attend the noon Mass so they can see the famous botafumeiro. You should also visit the Hotel Parador de los Reyes Católicos which was originally built as a hospital for pilgrims in the 16th century and which also provided shelter for pilgrims for three days. Maintaining the tradition, the first 10 pilgrims who show up to the Parador every day are given breakfast, lunch and dinner.
